What does the letter “K” stand for on sports and outdoor clothing?
The rain will often catch us off guard when we’re trekking, running or walking in the mountains. Although most of us will already wear a breathable, lightweight jacket to keep us dry on our mountain adventures, it’s important for us to know just how waterproof and breathable our jackets are. This is where the "K" unit comes in.
“K” is a unit of measure indicating the level of waterproofness of sportswear and outdoor equipment. 20K items are the most technical and economical options for general use, with a high level of waterproofness and breathability, and many great features. But you will also find jackets with lower or higher K ratings, depending on the activity and environment, from as low as 5, 10 or 15K, all the way up to 28, 30, or even 45K!
You must also check that the seams are heat-sealed. If so, there will be a waterproof barrier given the absence of holes, significantly reducing the possibility of water penetrating your jacket. We also offer jackets with watertight zips, velcro fastenings and flaps to offer extra protection and enhance waterproofness.
